Meet The Luthier

Hi, I’m Daniel. Nice to meet you! I’ve been living in San Luis Obispo, California since 2009. My passion for guitars and music began in the early ‘90s and has stuck with me ever since. No matter what I’ve done since then, it was always there in the background as I’ve journeyed through different career paths and artistic endeavors. It’s why I started making guitars in 2018.

Fundamentally, I feel like I owe a good portion of my creative instincts to my family. I’m a fifth generation professional woodworker, but my family surname is an anglicized version of the German word for locksmith: Schlosser. My keyhole shaped truss rod covers are a nod to that trade heritage.

Before making guitars full time I worked as a finish carpenter where I got to know the ins and outs of precision wood work. I also spent over a decade working as a professional bike mechanic where I had opportunities to make custom tuned race bike parts, an endeavor I really gravitated towards. During that period, many people got to know me through my YouTube video appearances in the Art’s Cyclery Ask a Mechanic video series and my work as a Tour Insider presenter during the NBC Sports TV broadcast of the Amgen Tour of California cycling race.

Throughout my schooling I was always looking for opportunities to expand my skills as a maker and took as many shop classes as I could. By my count, that came to 10 different courses from junior high through to college. At home I liked soldering electronics kits and building plastic models. With all these past experiences, making electric guitars at this point in my life felt like a natural fit.

My innate curiosity has led to a good amount of career experimentation over the years. Since that’s way too big of a topic to cover here; and because a little mystery is always a good thing, I’ll save those stories for another time. Hopefully we’ll get to talk in person and get to know each other better while I’m working with you to make your dream guitar a reality!
